China is the world's oldest still existing civilization. The country's history is characterized by repeated splits and reunions between the changing times of peace and war, and violent dynastic changes.
The country's population of over one billion is one-fifth of the world's population, and consists predominantly (93%) of the Han Chinese. Important minorities include mandsjuriere. The Chinese language is divided into a number of spoken variations.

China is a typical agricultural country, and most of the Chinese living by cultivating rice, wheat and soybeans around rivers and deltas.

Beijing offers the world famous Tiananmen Square, Forbidden City, and of course the Great Wall in the mountains north of the city. In Xian terracotta army guarding steadily over China's first emperor, and further to the south are the cities of Suzhou and Hangzhou. Here the Yangtze river banks there are refined garden art, charming canal cities and landscape covered with tea bushes. In Hong Kong and Shanghai wonder the future just around the corner, and the modern metropolis is a fascinating blend of Eastern mysticism and modern lifestyle, which clearly reflects the country's vast contrasts.

A river cruise on the Yangtze is another relaxing way to experience the contrasts between the modern and the traditional China.
