The great mountain range of the Alps goes through Austria and the Danube River flows through. With its location in the Alps is Austria's western and southern parts mountains and Austria is a popular winter resort. The highest mountain is the Grossglockner at 3798 meters. The northern and eastern part of the country is mostly hilly terrain. The climate is temperate, with cold winters and cool summers.
Austria is a federal state in Central Europe, consisting of nine states, each with its own parliament and government. Austria is landlocked on all sides and bordered by Switzerland and Liechtenstein to the west, Italy and Slovenia in the north, Slovakia and Hungary to the east, and Germany and the Czech Republic to the north. The main cities are the capital Vienna, located on the Danube, Salzburg, Innsbruck, Graz and Linz. Approximately ten percent of Austrians are not of Austrian origin, most of these are from the surrounding countries. A large group of migrant workers is also present in the country. The official language is German spoken by everyone. |
