Dunedin is the second largest city on the South Island of New Zealand and is the main city in the region of Otago. Dunedin is regarded as one of the four largest cities in New Zealand of the historical, cultural and geographical reasons. The urban area of Dunedin is located at the Central and East coast of Otago, around the top of Otago Harbour. The Harbour and hills around Dunedin are the remnants of an extinct volcano.

In Dunedin, University of Otago is New Zealand's oldest university, founded in 1869.

Dunedin has a significant public art gallery, Dunedin public art gallery, in the Octagon. The city has many other galleries, including over a dozen dealer galleries. There are also a number of more experimental art spaces, especially the Blue Oyster Gallery on Dowling Street. Many famous musicians have strong ties to Dunedin. Dunedin is home to ten different choirs. In the city is the world's southernmost professional theatre company: The Fortune Theatre. Here is also the Botanical Gardens and Dunedin Chinese Garden, as well as several cathedrals and churches.
